TUESDAY, MARCH 6, 2007
Before an enthusiastic crowd of 400 people, Mayor Bill Haslam announced
that he will run for a second term as Knoxville’s Mayor. In an early
morning kick-off, Mayor Haslam talked about the new cooperative spirit
in Knoxville and how it’s energizing our city. "I ran four years ago
saying that it’s Knoxville’s time and I really believe that and now
we want to keep Knoxville moving forward."
Mayor Haslam emphasized that there’s a new spirit in Knoxville, a
spirit of cooperation that’s making our city a better place to live.
"We work best when we work together, sharing many different thoughts
and ideas to come up with the best way to move our city forward,"
Haslam said.
The Mayor is focused on four goals that will make Knoxville America’s
premier city to live, work and raise a family; stronger, safer neighborhoods;
more and better jobs; downtown, everyone’s neighborhood and quality
city services at a competitive price.
He talked about some accomplishments that are helping to achieve those
goals: the establishment o a 3-1-1 center, a place where citizens
can call and get action on any question or problem they may have;
the chronic problem properties task force which is helping to clean
up blighted properties in our neighborhoods; a $35 million investment
by Sysco to build a new distribution center in an old rail yard; the
synergy that comes from having the University of Tennessee and the
Oak Ridge National Lab in our backyard; an energized downtown including
Mast General Store, the renovated Tennessee and Bijou Theatres and
a soon to open Regal Cineplex.
“Developing the South Waterfront is the biggest project that my administration
will undertake and will have the most impact over the next 50 years,”
said Mayor Haslam. "Not only will it change the look of our city,
but we can expect a financial investment of over $1 billion."
The Mayor complimented city workers on the fine job they do, "One
of the most important things we do is take care of basic services,"
he said. "Our citizens expect their roads to be paved, their garbage
and brush to be picked up and they want sidewalks. City taxpayers
also want to feel safe and the men and women in our police and fire
departments make sure that happens."
"I believe we’re delivering good service while keeping costs low,"
said Mayor Haslam. "Our city’s finances are the strongest they’ve
ever been while still providing quality services for our citizens."
He also complimented the teamwork that exists between his administration
and city council.
In addition to all of this, the Mayor pointed out that we’re being
recognized across the nation as a great place to live and work. Expansion
Magazine has named Knoxville as one of the top ten places to do business,
Forbes has named Knoxville as the fifth best place for business and
career, CNN has called us one of the top 10 places to retire and the
Economic Research Institute says Knoxville is the best place to live
for a recent college graduate. "I think all of this means we must
be doing something right," said Mayor Haslam.
The city primary will be held on Tuesday, September 25 and the general
election is on Tuesday, November 6.
